BACK STORY:

Every story has a BACK STORY and this one starts with Keith Curry Lance and a study that he and his partners conducted in Colorado [1993]. This Colorado Study showed a correlation between the work done in libraries by librarians and student achievement.

This study has since been replicated in 21 other states, with the same results: the presence of a credentialed school librarian supported by staff and a budget raises student achievement.

And yet, the word has not gotten out – the story has not been spread to the folks who need to hear it most: parents, administrators, teachers, and most importantly: legislators.

Dr Achterman, in his dissertation, produced a study that made the same correlation.

And yet, still, school librarians are losing their jobs all over the country in an effort to cut costs in schools.

Why don’t  people know about school librarians? That’s our next post...
